Beit Midrash

Bringing Torah to Life and Life to Torah

OJC provides learning opportunities for everyone from one to one hundred years old.

Obviously, through our Nursery School and innovative Religious School program we are providing excellent Jewish education for children.

But with the development of our Beit Midrash, we are now offering even more educational experiences and opportunities for adults, too.

OJC has undertaken an exciting new project: the creation of a Beit Midrash, a center of learning and dialogue.

A Beit Midrash is a place where people of all backgrounds can come to engage in seeking a deeper and more nuanced understanding of Judaism through dialogue and study. It is a comfortable space in which you can sit and open a book and read with a cup of tea or engage in the study of the classic texts of our tradition with a friend. It is a place to ask questions about what it means to be Jewish and to seek meaning, relevance, and purpose.

The Beit Midrash is an idea: it is based on the belief that engagement in Jewish life begins in a combination of the mind and the heart. Without knowledge, we cannot seek a deeper understanding of Jewish life or become part of the conversation that has taken place down through the generations. And without the heart Judaism is academics; we wish to touch the heart with the profound insights of Jewish living and thought. In the words of Solomon Schechter, it is a place where we bring “Torah to life and life to Torah.”

The Beit Midrash is open whenever the synagogue building is open. Rabbis Greenspan and Fellman will be present in the Beit Midrash to guide you and offer advice on where to find the resources and information you are looking for by appointment and a assigned times throughout the week.

The Beit Midrash contains a growing collection of the great books and classics of Jewish life. It will also contain books for children and people of all ages about Torah. We hope to have internet access and on line resources available for those who need them in this space as well (still a work in progress).

Wednesday nights will be Beit Midrash night. Courses will be offered by members of the OJC community from 7-8 PM and a classes and lectures will be offered from 8:15 – 9:30 following Minyan. This coming year, members of the OJC community will participate in the study of The Observant Life, recently published by the Rabbinical Assembly. A schedule of events in the Beit Midrash will be sent to the congregation and will be listed here on line in coming weeks.

The Beit Midrash is open to the entire community. We hope that this will become a place for dialogue and discovery, where people of all backgrounds can come to explore issues of faith, morality and meaning. The online Beit Midrash will become a site that allows you to bring the conversation home by providing resources, reflections and a continuing dialogue on matters of Torah.
