Bringing Torah to Life and Life to Torah
The Beit Midrash is open whenever the synagogue building is open. Rabbis Greenspan and Fellman will be present in the Beit Midrash to guide you and offer advice on where to find the resources and information you are looking for by appointment and a assigned times throughout the week.
The Beit Midrash contains a growing collection of the great books and classics of Jewish life. It will also contain books for children and people of all ages about Torah. We hope to have internet access and on line resources available for those who need them in this space as well (still a work in progress).
Wednesday nights will be Beit Midrash night. Courses will be offered by members of the OJC community from 7-8 PM and a classes and lectures will be offered from 8:15 – 9:30 following Minyan. This coming year, members of the OJC community will participate in the study of The Observant Life, recently published by the Rabbinical Assembly. A schedule of events in the Beit Midrash will be sent to the congregation and will be listed here on line in coming weeks.
The Beit Midrash is open to the entire community. We hope that this will become a place for dialogue and discovery, where people of all backgrounds can come to explore issues of faith, morality and meaning. The online Beit Midrash will become a site that allows you to bring the conversation home by providing resources, reflections and a continuing dialogue on matters of Torah.
Wednesday Evening Beit Midrash: Learning, Living, and Dialogue
Please note that the schedule below is being updated and for 2012. Announcements and updates to this page are coming soon. Contact us, if you have any questions.
a. Lehrhaus: the best type of learning happens when we teach others. Do you have a special interest in Jewish civilization? Is there an area of Judaism you always wanted to learn about? Do you have a talent or a skill that can be used to express your Jewish identity: music, art, writing or maybe drama. Use your talent to express your identity and to teach others. We will help you find a Jewish dimension in your interests and talents. The lehrhaus is a place where we learn to bring our daily lives to Torah. In coming months we hope to publicize learning opportunities: congregants teaching other congregants the Torah of life!
Wednesday Evenings, beginning October 17th, 2012 from 7- 8 PM
b. Beit Midrash: As part of a yearlong exploration of Jewish living, our congregation will be studying the recently published work: The Observant Life: The Wisdom of Conservative Judaism for Contemporary Jews. A yearlong cycle of reading has been arranged so that we can read this new work in conjunction with the weekly Torah portion. It is an opportunity to learn not only the ‘what’ but the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ of Conservative Judaism.
Wednesday Evenings, beginning October 17th, 2012 from 8:15 – 9:30 PM, with Rabbi Mark Greenspan
c. But I can’t be there at that time! Want to visit the Beit Midrash but can’t attend on Wednesday night? Is there something you would like to learn about with a private teacher? We will work around your schedule! Call the synagogue office a private session in the Beit Midrash around your availability.
